3 Day . Renewing Your Visual Journey through Paint

Studio

My goals for this workshop are to set forth to the student clear, concise, easy to follow steps that will give students the skills to solve their own challenges with painting.  I will break the process down simply so they can analyze their work and answer their own questions as to what constitutes a successful painting.

We will cover the following -
1. Review oil painting materials going through choices with selecting surfaces, mediums, brushes, and easels realizing that using quality materials enhances our ability to control and get the most from the medium.

2. Teach the importance of good drawing skills.  How drawing will help your painting. Tools that will help you do this include doing a thumbnail sketch beforehand

3. Composition/Good Design – look at different visual possibilities within the context of one subject.  Become more in tune with the possibilities of composition, learning how to analyze for success within the painting by looking at the abstract construction of the painting and the negative space, not just the subject. The first division of space should not be divided equally creating a ping-pong effect. Dividing spaces into unequal parts will result in better composition

4. Seeing the importance of values and how they relate to color.  Recognizing the importance of having a strong value pattern within the overall design.  Being able to see and mix same value different colors.

5. Understanding ones palette of colors.  For beginners we will use a limited palette, just the primaries and white.  We will cover the importance of mixing and the ability to get the most from the colors we use even with a limited palette.

6. Experiment with paint application with brush and/or palette knife.

7. Learn how to critique ones work to help solve the problems faced with each painting.

8. Your evolution as an artist depends on your ability to see simply and paint from life.  We will explore how to approach painting from life and its importance.  Why not just paint from photographs?

I truly believe anyone with a passion to learn and a willingness to develop their artistic eye can be given a simple understanding of these tools which will help them be able to hone their skills and see advancement in their work.

You as an art student face two challenges; learning the CRAFT of painting and learning how to say want you want to say ARTISTICALLY. We will look at each of these knowing that ultimately they should blend together to product the best work possible.

Seeing the importance of preparation is the key to good painting along with the ability to solve your problems one step at a time.  Conceptualize everything in your mind first, having a purpose for each stroke.

We will paint from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m daily.
